We wrote this song for Braver Angels, a nonprofit social-change organization which seeks to foster dialogue between “red” and “blue” Americans. The song had to capture Braver Angels’ mission—not to debate points of view or attempt to convince the other side, but simply to meet and see each other as human, and attempt to find common ground. The writing happened to coincide with the whirlwind of events of the eventful spring and summer of 2020: the public health emergency, the tsunami of demonstrations for social justice, the shared hardship of the economic crisis, and the upcoming presidential election, which made that mission seem even more urgent than before.
